Thumbelina
|
Once
upon a time
there lived a woman who wanted
to have a child. A witch heard her wish and said, "Take this seed
and plant it. Your
wish will come true."
|
The woman planted
the seed and it grew into a beautiful flower. When the flower
opened, there was a tiny girl in the middle of the flower.
"My own daughter!" exclaimed the woman. |
|
|
The little girl was
no bigger than a thumb. "I will call
her Thumbelina," said the woman. The woman had many flowers in her
home and she let Thumbelina make her room among the flowers.
Thumbelina was very happy. The woman had put a
bowl of water under the flowers. Thumbelina was so small that
the bowl was like her own lake.
One day, a frog was sitting by the window and saw Thumbelina.
"What a beautiful wife she would make for my son," thought the frog.
She jumped into the kitchen and grabbed
Thumbelina from the flowers. |
|
|
|
The
frog took Thumbelina to her home at the pond. She left
Thumbelina on a Lily pad
while she went to tell her son that she had found him
a wife. Thumbelina began to cry because she did not
want to marry a frog.
|
|
|
The fish heard her
crying. They chewed the stem
of the Lily pad until it was no longer attached to the bottom of the
pond. Thumbelina was free and she sailed down a little stream.
When she reached the
shore, she began to explore the forest.
It was getting cold and Thumbelina needed a place to stay for the
winter. She found a little door within the tall grass.
"Welcome to my house. Come in and have something to eat," said
a mouse.
Thumbelina ate with the mouse. She stayed with him for the whole
winter. During that time, Thumbelina met Mr. Mole - a very rich mole. |
|
|
| |
Mr.
Mole loved to live in dark tunnels.
Thumbelina loved the sunshine. Mr. Mole wanted to marry Thumbelina,
but Thumbelina did not want to marry him. |
|
|
A few days before
their wedding, Thumbelina was sitting outside crying. A bird heard
her cry and asked, "Why are you crying?" Thumbelina explained
her situation. The bird offered to take
Thumbelina to his home. |
|
|
|
Thumbelina
climbed on the bird's wing and they flew to an old
house. The bird put Thumbelina in one of the flowers
because he knew she loved flowers.
|
|
|
When the flower opened,
she saw that there was a tiny prince inside. The prince was the same
size as her! The prince loved the sunshine. The prince loved
the flowers. The prince loved Thumbelina. The prince and Thumbelina
got married and lived happily ever after.
